A Trip to Sri Lanka: a desire to travel and to observe and study railways as well as wild life.

I thought that readers might be interested in this. A tour, largely organized by Jagathsingh of ‘Luxury Tours’, SriLanka and my wife was most enjoyable. There were many highlights connected with the tour one of which was the ride on the Sri Lankan Railway from Kandy to Ella. This trip has to be one of the great railway journeys of the world revealing the most beautiful scenery, the tea gardens and water falls. I shall share  more about the trip whenever I catch up with you at exhibition, club runs, private garden railways etc. However, a close study was made of the Tyer’s Block and Tablet system at work introduced during the 19th century and it is still working very efficiently and effectively today. The system has been properly maintained and gives excellent service.

We rode on the train through the loop at Demodara where the line turns back on itself and actually runs under the station building and general area.

We saw the Nine Arch Bridge and realized how important the railway was to the economy  and to the social fabric  of the countryside. More about this later.
